OK, when I said there was no audio interface, the Dante Virtual Soundcard or DVS, is technically an audio interface, its a software interface, rather than a hardware box linked to your computer via USB or Thunderbolt. In this article, part 2 of a series from a recording session with The Elite Quartet, I am going to elaborate on the recording rig I used to capture the session and show you how I used the Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) in place of a hardware audio interface.

For older Pro Tools HD systems Digilink to mini-Digilink adaptors can be used.In recent months at Production Expert we have talked a great deal about different Audio Over Internet Protocol (AoIP) solutions and how they can be used in audio recording systems.

These interfaces have 32-channels of Dante inputs and outputs that can be transmitted to or from mini-Digilink connectors. Pro Tools HD x RedNet 5 or RedNet HD32Rįor applications where a Pro Tools HD system is used, it is possible to get Dante audio from a network to an Avid HD interface using the RedNet 5 (discontinued) or the RedNet HD32R. DVS does NOT come bundled with the Red Range.

The maximum number of channels available when using DVS is 64 x 64.ĭVS comes bundled for free with all RedNet units apart from RedNet PCIe, RedNet PCIeR card, RedNet 5 and RedNet HD32R. The overall system latency varies depending on the host computer and DAW software in use, but in most cases will be similar to the latency experienced using a USB interface and will be higher than the latency incurred when using the PCIe card.

Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS)įor customers who do not require ultra-low-latency performance, Audinate's Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) can be used with a single connection to the computer's Ethernet port and without the need to install a RedNet PCIe card.

You still need to connect a standard ethernet port on the computer to the Dante network as well in order to configure devices and route between them using Dante Controller. The Dante port on the Red is used to send and receive all Dante audio data. Red Range (Red 4Pre, Red 8Pre, Red 8Line, Red 16Line)Įach model in the Red Range connects to your computer over Thunderbolt and features 32 x32 Dante channels, with very low latency (and the ability to bridge directly to/from a Pro Tools HD/HDX/HD Native system over DigiLink).

The Dante port on the RedNet PCIe/PCIeR card is used to send and receive all Dante audio data. RedNet PCIe/PCIeR CardĬonnecting a RedNet PCIe/PCIeR card to a computer allows for up to 128 inputs and 128 outputs (up to 96kHz, 64 x 64 at 192kHz) with very low latency between the computer and the Dante network. There are a few ways to connect a Dante system to your computer, each with different benefits and suitable for different installations.
